Metro Cebu has several cities namely Cebu City, Mandaue City, Talisay City and Lapu-Lapu City, people from the outskirts of Metro Cebu usually travel to Cebu City or I.T. Park Cebu everyday to report to work or school.  Traveling within Cebu can be both fun as well as challenging if you are new but of course it is always easier to ask the local people for directions

Cebu City Rapid Bus Transit System Project Phase 1 and 2 and Cordova Link Expressway Bridge

Preparations are underway for the latest ground·breaking mass transportation, the Cebu City Rapid Bus Transit System.  The initial project has 2 phases, the first phase will span along Cebu South Road on N. Bacalso Avenue (located near the South Bus Terminal) up to the Provincial Capitol through the Osmena Boulevard. The second phase of the project, which traverses Bulacao, Talisay City (southern part of Cebu) to Talamban, (Northern part), and is targeted to be fully operational by March 2022
When completed, the Cebu BRT system will have 33 stations with 176 buses with buses passing each station every two to five minutes. more than 330,000 passengers are expected to use the BRT line every day.  The BRT line will be complemented by a modified jeepney network which will operate as feeders and complementary services to the BRT route.  Space will be made at BRT stations for interchanging jeepney routes.  The Cebu City Rapid Bus Transit System will mirror other modern big city automated transportation, similar to those found in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore

The BRT Transit System infrastructure is designed to lesson the chaotic traffic around Cebu City.  The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) is expected to integrate the BRT Transit System, the Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway Bridge which opened April 2022, the project will provide faster airport transfer links between Mactan island and mainland Cebu City, The Link Expressway Bridge facility is already designed to accommodate speeds of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour (kph)

Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway Bridge will stramline direct airport transfer saving at least 40 minutes into Cebu City and vice versa, compared to the conventional route via M.L. Quezon National Highway and the two older bridges connecting Mandaue City, this area is more prone to traffic congestion at peak times

Airport transfer times into Cebu City and Ayala Center area Hotels from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB)

Route via Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway Bridge into Cebu City and South Road Properties (SRP)

Beep-Buses, Peoples Jeep and TRIPKO Jeep in Cebu

There is a noticeable trend in Cebu City where the local Cebu Government now prefer a new kind of Jeepney-Bus called BEEP-Buses, Peoples Jeep and TRIPKO Jeep. A more eco-friendly public transport for Cebu, Beep-Buses, Peoples Jeep and TRIPKO Jeep are already in operational on selected routes in Cebu. Apart from being ultra modern, Beep-Buses, Peoples Jeep and TRIPKO Jeep have designated bus stops for boarding and to deboard, you cannot stop Beep-Buses anywhere on the route they Ply, unlike the traditional Jeepney. Beep-Buses and Peoples Jeep are better for the environment and will improve carbon emissions in Cebu. It’s inevitable in the near future that the old style Jeepney and Multi-cab will be phased out in favor of Beep- Buses,  Peoples Jeep and Cebu City Rapid Bus Transit System (2021-2022) transportations

Blue vs White BEEPs in Cebu

The only insignificant difference between the two (aside from the colour,) is the seating capacity

Blue BEEP: can carry 33 passengers with 26 seats

White BEEP: can carry 31 persons, with 22 seats

Beep-Buses in Cebu are air-conditioned,WIFI enabled, GPS, CCTV, automated fare system, and individualized seating. The minumum fare for the shortest journey is ₱11.00 plus an additional ₱1.50 for every succeeding kilometer, while the average fare is just ₱25.00

TRIPKO Jeep is a reloadable transport card used for contactless fare payment in public utility vehicles (PUVs).

In partnership with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Region 7, Tourganize Group of Companies, Inc.

TRIPKP Jeep, is a ultra modern public Jeep, already plying Talisay to I.T. Park.
Route starts at Gaisano Tabunok via Tisa Banawa-Escario-Lahug and vice versa, in a fleet of modern cashless Jeeps.

Old Style Jeepney in Cebu

A Jeepney is the most common and cheap way to travel around Cebu for locals, tourist need to be aware of their surroundings at all times when using them, especially while in heavy traffic, slow traffic and sudden stops.  Try not to carry all of your valuables in the same place.  If you’re traveling with a companion, make sure each of you has some cash and a credit card on hand in case you’re split up.  If you’re alone, keep a backup credit or debit card in a separate pouch from the one you’ll be using most often

If your on a budget or a first time Cebu Tourist, you can always choose to ride a Jeepney in Cebu.  There are two types of  Jeepney’s in Cebu, the more traditional and bigger old style Cebu Jeepney which often have more seating or carry more passengers, the other style and more common Jeepney in Cebu are called Multi-cabs which are smaller and have striking and grand exterior designs.  What’s fun and different about Multi-cabs in Cebu, the drivers turn on the colorful inside and outside lights at about 7 PM everynight and play lound music from the internal speakers, local Cebu Multi-cabs Ply local routes and longer routes to and from Cebu City all the way to Carcar City going south

The fare range on a Jeepney in Cebu City is usually a minimum of ₱13.00 Peso, depending on how far you travel, the average fare up to 10 km is ₱13.00.  The latest fare is displayed inside the Jeepney on the official price list near to the back of the cab or behind the driver

Please take note that the price range on a Jeep or Beep-Buses in Cebu may rise because of gasoline price fluctuation, or the local Cebu Government agree to revise the price.  The Cebu Tourist should not be concerned of any sudden price hikes, considering how cheap it is generally on public transport in Cebu.  Also remember that local students and senior citizens will have discounted fare rate of 20% ID required, and people with disabilities (PWD), have priority seating in the front of the cab

Sometimes the local government or Cebu traffic officers change Jeepney routes, to help loosen traffic during peak times, the route may include a stop at Public Utility Jeepney (PUJ) terminal, while others just travel around the city without having the need to stop at (PUJ) terminals

If your a tourist and it’s your first time in Cebu, the Philippines we recommend you to try riding a Jeepney, you can stop a traditional Jeepney anywhere on the route.  Make yourself aware of incoming traffic and especially speeding moped-scooter, although Jeepney’s in Cebu do have designated boarding stops, usually at Public Utility Jeepney (PUJ), public market, shopping mall, schools, colleges, (PUJ) terminal, Brgy (village), and main residential areas

It may not be as comfortable as to what you’re used to but many foreign backpacking travelers love the Cebu Jeepney experience, It’s really fun and yes, if somebody hands you some cash, either coins or notes, it means you should hand it over to the person next to you, until it reaches the Jeepney conductor or driver.  If you are expecting change it will be handed back to you in the same fashion and if the person after you hands you over the change, hand it over to the person before you “plete palihug”, It simply means “please pass over my payment for the fare”

If there’s a conductor at the back, you pay your fare to the conductor otherwise pay the driver.  The Jeepney conductor usually hangs at the back of the Jeepney, or over the entrance or sits just right next to the Jeepney entrance.  You will know the Jeepney conductor or driver because he or she usually carries some cash notes wraped around there fingers and he or she calls people outside or beeps the horn to invite potential customers to ride, that’s very typical in Cebu and all over the Philippines

Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) Transfer by Jeepney

There are no direct Jeepney services that serve Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), to or via Robinsons Galleria Cebu, SM City Cebu, Fuente Osmeña Circle, Mango Sqaure, Ayala Center-Mall and Terraces, Downtown Cebu City, Uptown Cebu City and Talisay City. There are indirect Jeepney services, on average you would be expected to change 2 to 3 times to Cebu City or vice versa, depending on your location or route. Very few international tourists will ride a Jeepney for Airport Transfer from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) to Cebu City, simply because there not familiar with the complex Jeepney network and interchanging Brgy (village) or stops

There is just one reliable Jeepney Service Number MI-05A, serving Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) for shorter routes and all stops towards Cebu-Mactan Ferry Terminal

22 minutes, every 5 minutes (10 stops)

1. Timex Philippines Incorporated, stop here for Mactan Marina Mall and further Jeepney Services around Mactan island, and connections towards Parkmall, Reclamation Area, Mandaue City and Cebu City

2. The Bellavista Hotel

3. Gaisano Mactan

4. PLDT Telecommunications

5. Lapu-Lapu City PUJ Terminal

6. Super Metro Gaisano Lapu-Lapu

7. Mantawe Road

8. B.M Dimataga St

9. Opon Plaza

10. Cebu-Mactan Ferry Terminal, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, the Philippines

However unless your destination is very near it’s not worth the hassle or effort for tourists, not to mention the inconvenience, extended journey time, space for luggage, or comfort, considering MyBus and Sugbo offer frequent bus services to or from Cebu City, directly outside Terminal 1 and 2 with modern seating and air-con at cheap prices (not 24 hours), therefore it’s far less appealing to ride a Jeepney from or to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB)

There is no reliable Jeepney that serves to or from SM Seaside City Mall Cebu, occasionally due to traffic congestion or traffic diversions, certain Jeepney numbers may convey towards SM Seaside City Cebu, but that’s not the regular route.  MyBus is the only scheduled service to Ply SM Seaside City Mall Cebu.  Alternatively a metered white flagged taxi is the most convenient way to or from SM Seaside City Mall Cebu, in a addition to Grab App taxi-car and Habal-Habal Scooter-Moped for independent hire or by App based Angkas Scooter-Moped for hire

SM City Mall Cebu is very well served by direct Jeepney and vice versa from almost anywhere in Cebu City and Mandaue City

Cebu Tricycle (Urban Motorised Taxi)

One of the major mode of transport in Cebu City, Cebu Province and surrounding islands is the motorised tricycle, a small cab powered by a motorcycle side car, with colourful exteria designs, that can accommodate 4 to 6 passengers.  Motorised tricycles in Cebu mostly Ply shorter routes or a specific route, around the Brgy (village) they are licensed to.  Although on surrounding Cebu islands they are often the first noticeable form of transport, including motorcycle-scooter habal – habal, waiting port side for ferry customers to disembark and potentially transport them to there island resort or accommodation, including residential areas, local grocery stores, public markets, Cebu ports, Cebu public beaches, Cebu beach resorts, mini shopping malls (Gaisano Stores), and local churches

Motorised Tricycles in Cebu are usually limited only to the city, town or Brgy (village) where they are licensed to operate, but in some cases they may convey you to neighboring towns or barangays.  The initial or licensed minimum fare for a Motorised Tricycle shortest journey in Cebu is ₱8.00 per person, depending on the route or distance, each succeeding km is ₱8.00 per person.  However Tricycle drivers seem to take advantage of The Cebu Tourist by overcharging or quote a higher fare, especially on shorter routes in Cebu, mainly because most tourists are not familiar with the route or island.  Most journeys on average are just 3 kms, and you should expect to pay no more than ₱50.00 for two adults.  It’s possible to negotiate a fixed private hire fare with the driver for longer routes or by the hour, more commonly on Cebu islands and beach resorts, for example if your hotel, beach resort or waterfall attraction is a considerable distance

Motorised Tricycles in Cebu are very convenient, not just because they can accommodate small luggage or backpacks, you can stop them anywhere on the road or route they Ply.  You may hire a private Tricycle anywhere in Cebu, and it’s typically inexpensive, especially if your in a group, or prefer not to pick up other passengers without the need to stop on that route

If you’re based in Moalboal or one of the beach or dive resort, most backpackers and tourists prefer to hire a moped-scooter by the day or week while already in Moalboal, because the area is situated central and very accessible to explore the area waterfall attractions, beaches and other attractions either side of the island, including Tan-Awan and Oslob.  Alternatively and cheap you may board a bus from the main bus terminal in central Moalboal near 360 Pharmacy heading south towards Santander – Barili – Toledo Rd towards the Kawasan Falls Trail and Canyoneering just 45 minutes (22 kms).  The bus journey continues south on the same route from Moalboal to Ginatilan and Samboan waterfall attractions, the final stop is Santander, the distances are much greater at 1 hour – 45 minutes to 2 hours (55 kms to 75 kms).  From Moalboal, the bus services are very frequent or about every 30 to 45 minutes all day 7 days a week.  However we do recommend the air-con bus, buses initially depart frequently via Cebu City South Bus Terminal, and head South West at Carcar City Rotunda to all stops to Santander, via Barili – Toledo Rd

Cebu Pedal Tricycle, “Trisikad” (Urban Pedal Taxi)

Another very common, cheap and abundant local Cebu transport is a Pedal Tricycle “Trisikad” which can accommodate up to 2 passengers, they mostly Ply shorter routes in and round urban Cebu, residential areas and Cebu islands for example routes to or from local grocery stores, public markets, Cebu ports, Cebu public beaches, Cebu beach resorts, mini shopping malls (Gaisano Stores), and local churches

Pedal Tricycle don’t usually Ply highways in Cebu, although you will see them occasionally, in more remote areas of Cebu, they are more common in and around Brgy (villages) or less congested areas, they mainly Ply shorter routes all over Cebu

Cebu E-Trikes (Urban Electric Taxi)

Aside from being environment-friendly, Cebu E-Trikes are becoming more popular around Cebu City and the Cebu Provinces.

Cebu E-Trikes are relatively new, and since introduced more branded corporations use E-Trikes for business purpose, they are expected to become very popular for passengers in Cebu City and in more remote areas to Ply Brgy (villages), Cebu islands and Towns, because the cost of gas or diesel is more expensive compared to Cebu City.  Most E-Trikes can accommodate 4 passengers, some smaller E-Trikes can only accommodate 2 passengers, usually battery powered by a moped-scooter, all E-Trikes, mostly Ply shorter routes in and round urban Cebu, residential areas and Cebu islands for example routes to or from local grocery stores, public markets, Cebu ports, Cebu public beaches, Cebu beach resorts, mini shopping malls (Gaisano Stores), and local churches

Cebu Motorcycle-Scooter Ride for Hire, Habal – Habal (Unregulated Paid Ride)

Filipinos use motorcycle-scooter ride for hire, Habal – Habal, because it’s fast and cheap and you’ll see them all over Cebu touting for business, they will carry up to 2 passengers, The Cebu Tourist should generally avoid this type of paid hire in Cebu, because it’s unregulated and have no set tariff, you can be easily be overcharge for what is only a short journey if your not familiar with the route

If you do decide to ride a Habal – Habal in Cebu the estimted fare for 5km or 3 miles is estimated at ₱120.00 per customer, for a very short journey of less than 1 mile should cost no more than ₱40.00 per customer, although prices will vary depending on the traffic congestion or route

App based Habal – Habal for hire in Cebu by Angkas seem to be more appealing to hire and especially for The Cebu Tourist, since the price is fixed, and you’ll be aware of the price before you ride, it is however somewhat vague if you can call Angkas in Cebu officially regulated and licensed, since the Cebu government have not officially approved or issued drivers with a taxi style license

Contradicting on what I’ve just mentioned, there will however be occasions where a tourist will rely or ride a local Habal – Habal in Cebu, notable towards the entrance of a waterfall attraction path, beach, hot-cold springs, and a inaccessible path usually leading up to a mountainous region, but the price will be cheap and usually fixed by the local Brgy (village) community, you may spot a tariff sign post, usually attached to a tree
